Interestingly the Guardian’s Organ Grinder asks here ”a PR stunt or innovative advertising?” Well, this is kinda the whole point isn’t it? If it is genuinely engaging (which is what all ‘advertising’ strives to be), it is neither; it’s content.

The transfer merry-go-round

What better way to show their nerdy following (and that’s not a digg- jocks ruled school but nerds boss the real world) that they are still in touch with the yout’; a new video promoting their latest single making reference to past youtube viral characters- no surprise then the video has had millions of hits already.

Clever really; launch a viral video utilising enough past references for it to be more than just a tip of the cap acknowledgment- a full blown homage to the whole culture of video sharing sites giving people reason to post and talk about it generating the “buzz” that nearly every client under the sun wants today- no amount of digital strategising can substitute for just a ruddy good idea. A catchy tune helps too.

A compelling read

A compelling read: The power of a web log.

The noneofusarefree Burmese appeal website

The noneofusarefree Burmese appeal website

The power of that there interweb thingy...

… this has just got to be the best thing I’ve read this year! We were initially due to launch last week, then the cyclone hit and we had to reappraise the messaging as the video and accompanying website focused on the political oppression of the Burmese people rather than their immediate plight post Nargis. Since Nargis hit though, their have been numerous failings of Burmese ‘junta’ government in their handling of the disaster- namely the distribution of aid. A timely reminder then that this government is not fit to govern. The video has been produced by Shilo, MTV and Ogilvy (though I work here and the creative team came from here- network politics!) Beautifully shot and wonderful accompanying soundtrack from Chopin. You’ll be able to find it by searching noneofusarefree on youtube and the website www.noneofusarefree.org with more deets is here. Here is some of the thoughts around the spot taken from the accompanying press release issued by MTV Networks;

Long before cyclone Nargis hit the people of Burma, the Burmese military ‘junta’ ruling Burma had been causing devastation to the lives of it’s people. Unless the people of the world speak out in peaceful protest, more days will be lost in the delay to get international relief to the Burmese people who need it the most. The situation grows more severe by the day and the funds needed to placate the disaster grows daily too. To a people, who before this disaster were already struggling against all odds, this spot is a message of solidarity and to urge the global community to donate to the ongoing relief effort.

Probably.
